Our Beginnings
WG&R Furniture first opened its doors in 1946. Our first store was located at 1237 Main Street in Green Bay. People still remember our slogan used for over 40 years: "A mile from downtown, 'tis true, but a mile from high prices too!"
Quick Fact: Our name was derived from the initials of our founders: Henry Wagnitz, Paul Greene, Carl Greene and Henry Rupp.
By 1955 the Greene Family bought out the other partners to hold full ownership of WG&R. They continued the young company’s tradition of excellent customer service, great value and personal treatment which would become the foundation of future growth and success.
Growth and Expansion
Throughout the 1960's we continued to expand our Green Bay location on Main St. In 1963 WG&R moved to Oshkosh. The opening of an additional location would quickly create the need for our first warehouse, a 45,000 square foot building which helped streamline our inventory control processes and pave the way for future growth.
In the early 1970's we expanded to Manitowoc and later moved to a new location in Oshkosh, continuing our efforts to better serve northeast Wisconsin. In 1984, realizing the demand for quality mattresses, the WG&R Mattress Factory was born in Two Rivers, WI. Today the factory is running stronger than ever, producing Wisconsin's #1 selling factory direct mattresses as well as private label bedding for several other retailers throughout the Midwest.
In 1989 we opened a new store in Appleton and moved our corporate office and warehouse to a new facility in Green Bay. A few years later in 1992 we moved our Green Bay store from its long time Main St. location to our current Hansen Rd. location. During the mid 90's we opened new stores in Manitowoc and Oshkosh.
As we moved into the year 2000 WG&R continued to grow, opening furniture stores in Sheboygan in 2002 and Fond du Lac in 2007. We also launched WG&R Sleep Shop in 2006. A mattress specialty store, WG&R Sleep Shops can be found within all WG&R Furniture locations as well as stand alone locations in Green Bay, Fond du Lac and the Fox Valley.
Today, WG&R Furniture continues to grow. We have recently opened new WG&R Clearance Centers within our Manitowoc and Sheboygan furniture showrooms. While furniture styles and fashions have changed significantly since we first opened our doors way back in 1946, our commitment to great customer service has not.
